Epically bad

  • Nov. 16th, 2009 at 11:19 PM
Me
So, I was curious and downloaded the Eighth Doctor's one adventure, the made-for-tv movie from 1996.  It's ... wow.  The effects, sets, costumes, music, cinematography, all production values are like 100x better than the TV show which preceded it.  (Well, except for the cover of the theme song, which sucks.)  But the acting and the writing are ... bad.  Very bad.  Not consistently--there are some great scenes--but I can see why this never managed to launch a new series like they hoped.  Though it would have been cool if it had; there's potential.  It's just--they're going for an epic feel to it, which it didn't manage to carry off.  Question: is the Asian kid the first companion of color?  Even if he only lasted one episode.

If you are a science fiction fan of any religion who gets annoyed at the dismissive way a lot of science fiction often treats religion, this fic is for you. It is Christian, but focuses mainly on the Doctor's reaction to events, not on events themselves, so it should be enjoyable for everyone.

Title: Correlation and Causality
Characters: One, Three, Susan.
Spoilers: inspired by a throw-away line in Planet of the Dead, but no spoilers for the episode.
Rating: U, gen.
Words: 740.
Summary: Ten seems quite confident that he knows what happened that first Easter. But it wouldn't be the first time the Doctor's exaggerated how close he was to historical events, or that he's leaped to conclusions...
Vaguely inspired by Spike's comment in Buffy about how more people remember being at the Crucifixion than can possibly have been there.
Warnings: Um, results from slight irritation with RTD's attempts to do theology? I nearly called it "Happy Easter, emo Time Lord", but decided not to.

Great quote

Tardis
From a fic by [info]astrogirl2, Tremor, about Romana's school days, and her perspective (before she knew the Doctor) of an Old School episode in which the Doctor and the Master were fighting over Gallifrey, and the results included Presidential assasinations and earthquakes. Romana discusses the Master and the Doctor with her schoolmates:

Avalred shook his head. "Professor Destarla taught both of them. I've talked to her about it. She says they were very different. She says one would do anything at all to succeed, whether it was acceptable or even reasonable, and the other couldn't ever get over his own ego for long enough to accomplish much of anything."

"Really?" said Romana, with interest. "Which one was which?"

"You know... I'm really not sure!" He laughed again.

It made my day.

The Gift of the Mad Guy by [info]sam_storyteller

The Doctor joins some Kings of Orient following a star, helps a quartet of sociologists, gets thrown in prison, meets shepherds (ditto: talking sheep), finds a baby in a stable, uses Christmas carols for nefarious ends, and learns The True Meaning Of Camel.

Quick beta?

Me
Is there anyone who would be able to beta an Atlantis/Doctor Who crossover, and get it back to me tomorrow if I sent it to them today? It mostly needs help with plot and characterization, and a double check to see if I'm being too wordy.

It's for the Multiverse 5000, and it's due the 30th. I can get the first draft done, but it doesn't feel like it's "clicked," to me. I don't know if it just needs some polishing or if there's something that needs to be fixed. Or if I'm being a nervous writer panicking over a deadline.

Doctor Meta: learning to live again.

I spent much of my free time last semester watching a friend's DVDs of New School Who, and a sampling of her Old School Who (Tom Baker era), while waiting for this season's Doctor Who to start in America. I avoided most spoilers, but not Lizbee's meta post on the difference between the old-school Doctor and Nine/Ten. Basically, it boils down to the fact that the Doctor is deeply emotionally scarrred by the destruction of Gallifrey and his role in it, and doesn't believe that he deserves a second chance--and because he doesn't think he deserves a second chance, can't quite make himself believe that others do, either, making him a much harder character, and more prone to manipulate and use others. Not always, but often enough to be a serious problem. [info]lizbee thinks Donna is good for the Doctor because she's not going to let him get away with that kind of thing, and is far more proactive about that than either Rose or Martha were, and when combined with the fact that he's had a little more time to heal than he has since the first time we saw Nine, he's actually starting to go back to something closer to what he used to be like. Having now seen the first few episodes of this season, I think lizbee's got some good insights here (although her knowledge of Old School Who is far superior to mine, so I can't judge that portion of her argument).

This, then, combines with something else I'd been thinking about as I re-watched the DVDs, namely that awesomeness that is Human Nature/Family of Blood. )

Everybody needs to go through the remix stories and leave lots of feedback--there are still some stories (including mine!) that don't have any, and the one that was written for me which is really cool only has my comment and it deserves more than that.

Anyway, here are the second half of my recs from [info]remixredux08:

On the Care And Feeding Of Time Lords (La Gherardini Overdrive Remix). Rose and Romana, post season 2. Wrong Universe, wrong Time Lord. Like Rose Tyler’s gonna let that stop her…

Cruciatus (the fire and blood remix). Bellatrix Black, and Cruciatus: a love story. It ends, as it began, with the Cruciatus.

The Grass is Always Greener (the Known Temptations Remix). Stargate SG-1. All the characters, but not really "team fic." No reality is perfect.  No matter what it may look like on the outside.

Things Kept (Caliban Bass n' Drums Remix). Doctor Who, post-series 3. Harriet Jones has always had her reasons, and always had her pride.
Six
Go check out all the lovely stories in [info]remixredux08. Here is part one of my list of recs:

Desert Glass (Ordinary Time remix). In his years on Tatooine, Obi-Wan finds he has a lot to learn. Lyric, painful, but full of life.

Lucid Diamond Sky (the Misogynistic Lash cut-up). Two's company, three's a crowd. Doctor Who, the Master/Lucy.

More of the Stars and Sea (The Three Meals Remix). Stargate: Atlantis, Teyla and Radek. They were merely colleagues who dined together from time to time. Strangers on the cusp of becoming friends.

Copper and Moonlight (The Mimi & Rodolfo Remix). B:tVS, a beautiful, heartbreaking look at Giles after Becoming.

She Bangs the Drums (Losing, Losing, Lost Remix). Doctor Who, the year that wasn't. Lucy's tragedy is that she loves him.

Reverb (Three Toasters, One Dead Body, and Ellen Tigh Walk into a Bar Remix). BSG, written for me! Outside in the distance a wildcat did growl. Two riders were approaching, the wind began to howl. Spoilers for Crossroads II.

I Have Become (Death) (The J.Robert Oppenheimer Remix). Babylon 5, Lyta Alexander and the Telepath War. You never forget your first. Or your last. Lyta Alexander would know.

Hush-A-Bye Baby (The Blackberry Remix). BtVS, Dawn and Drusilla. At night, the dark-haired girl without a name glowed at her through eddies of green light.

Enemies & Friends (The “Ogron, Ogron, Ogron” Remix). Sarah Jane Adventures/Doctor Who. In which there are Ogrons and Sarah Jane Smith struggles to figure out what the hell is going on. Starring Sarah Jane Smith, Vislor Turlough, Luke Smith, Maria Jackson, Clyde Langer, K9 Mark IV, Mister Smith, Ian Chesterton, Barbara Wright, Ianto Jones, Jack Harkness, Ace, Chrissie Jackson and Lots And Lots Of Ogrons.

The Art of Memory (Bold and Lonely Remix). Doctor Who. The Doctor's a hard man to forget.

Five Pay Phones Buffy Almost Called Giles From. BtVS, the summer she ran away.

Some Mother's Son (The A-Z Remix). Stargate: Atlantis, pre-series. Mothers are fonder than fathers of their children because they are more certain they are their own.

The Great Bikini Incident (The Key to Time Remix). Doctor Who/BtVS. Dawn’s suspicious of the three electricity inspectors outside her sister’s Rome apartment.

Awsome Dr Who fic you have to read

Okay, in my quest for Chameleon Arch fics (which, by the way, if you know any let me know), someone recced me the [info]dwseason4, an AU season 4 written by [info]ariastar in which the Master chose to regenerate at the end of season 3 and travel as the Doctor's prisoner. It is Made of Awesome, and if you have any interest in Doctor Who at all, you absolutely have to read it. Go. Now.

Here's what the author has to say about it: An alternate Doctor Who season four. In which the Doctor and the Master have dysfunctional adventures in time and space, Martha becomes a fully qualified doctor, Leo Jones wonders what all the fuss is about, the Torchwood team recounts Himalayan hijinks, and Lucy Saxon refuses to let the averted end of the world sideline her.

History Repeating

Tardis
And, true to recent history, the vid that really caught my eye today on one of my periodic vid hunts was a Doctor Who vid. A little gem by rhoboat called History Repeating. Sung by Shirley Bassey, it's about how no matter what happens, the Doctor's life stays pretty much the same: running, companions, and sonic screwdrivers.

For the Stargate fans out there, here's Who Knew? by [info]scifi_tv_addict (song by Pink), Vala and Tomin's relationship from his point of view.
Tardis
Here are two great ones:

They by [info]fahrbotdrusilla. Episodic vid for Human Nature/Family of Blood, set to 'They' by Jem.

I Feel Good by [info]humansrsuperior. The Master, set to 'I Feel Good' by James Brown.

And I have no Dr Who icons. This is a tragic oversight that must be remedied. Anyone know where I can find some good ones?

Dr Who Recs

  • Jul. 14th, 2007 at 3:41 PM
Me
[info]antennapedia is currently watching the new Dr Who for the first time, so I'm going to rec my favorite Dr Who stories.

First up is Five Moments in a Life that Never Was, by [info]cadhla. Five snapshots of Susan Foreman, later Susan Campbell, daughter of Gallifrey. (Susan is the Doctor's grandaughter, and traveled as a companion of the First Doctor.)

Next is Today's Not Over Yet by [info]misscam. Tomorrow, the world is ending, and today, he is happy. [Eighth Doctor with special guest stars.] The last day before the Doctor reported back home to fight in the Time Wars.

Ghost in the Machine by Rain. Rose is lost in time. Cue a rollercoaster ride of comedy, tragedy, misunderstandings, miracles and faces from the past.

Wouldn't You Like to Get Away? by [info]doyle_sb4. Martha (the companion after Rose), after leaving the Doctor to go back to school. Though it was written before any episodes with her had actually, you know, aired.

Misconceptions by [info]castrovalva9. The Tylers' neighbour has been observing Rose, Jackie, the Ninth and Tenth Doctors, and Mickey for a while now. This is her side of the story.

And, finally, my favorite: Cheer Up, Emo Time Moppet by [info]lizbee. What if the Doctor and Romana had a daughter together? This is her story. Links to the last part because it's the only one with links to all the chapters.

And here are some good Dr Who vids:

I'm Gonna Be by rhoboat. Ten and Rose, to 500 Miles by the Pretenders

Secret Agent Man HumansRSuperior. Ten, as the Secret Agent Man. (Both Rose and Martha)

Alas, the post on LJ where I downloaded my favorite Dr Who vid from is now protected, so I can't share it. And since it was a community, I can't even tell you the name of the author!

Me
Having spent way too much time yesterday and today reading Remix fics instead of doing my homework, here are my favorites:

SG-1:
Trigger Finger (The Eleven O'Clock Remix). Daniel has an unexpected brush with danger, and his team members find out. Also check out the original, Trigger Finger by Kathryn Andersen. It's not quite a ninja!Daniel fic, but it's good.

Atlantis:
We Swim Here One Stroke at a Time (The Post Hoc Remix). Rodney re-acclimates to Earth, or doesn't.

The Pledge and the Turn (The Paramnesia Remix). It takes a special kind of magician to make the extraordinary ordinary. Lorne and McKay and AAR's.

Buffy:
Dragon Heart. Buffy and Giles go searching for a weapon, and have a heart to heart.

What a Father Is (the DNA Remix). "I realize you’ve a dearth of male role models in your life, but a father is more than just an older man who happens to be around or who just happened to supply half your DNA." What the monks didn't say about Dawn.

Star Trek:
Power Corrupts (The Absolute Absolution Remix). It's the trial of the aeon. The Q Continuum vs. Kes, for the destruction of the Borg.

Narnia:
Legacy (The Spy Who Loved Me Remix). The most important asset to sovereignty is intelligence.

And a Doctor Who fic series that I found through its remix: Cheer Up, Emo Time Moppet. Life through the eyes of the Doctor and Romana's teenage daughter.

Go, read, and feed the authors!
